About Us

Two Irish guys Keegan's Pub is made up of a number of parts that all add up to a distinctively different and wonderful experience for our guests. You, the design, the Irish bric-a-brac, the drink, the food, the music, the history and the name create a sense of Irish history that people enjoy visiting time and time again.

Choosing the right name for our pub was extremely important. We wanted our name to tell a lot about our pub and after studying pub names, cities in Ireland and pub culture, we decided upon Keegan's Pub. The owner of Keegan's Pub is Terry Keegan. The name "Keegan" comes from the counties Tipperary and Roscommon. Variations of the name include "Eagan" and "Egan."

The logo for Keegan's Pub is a design based on the Keegan Family Crest, described as a "Lion Rampant on a Field of Crimson." In Ireland, the Lion represented the "lion" season, prior to the full arrival of summer. The symbol can also represent a great Warrior or Chief.

beer The "Field of Crimson" or red color on the shield represents Warrior, Martyr or Military Strength.

"Hope of glory, one who has been enlightened, or sign of the second son" are the meanings associated with the crescent appearing above the Lion's paw. The crown above the Lion's head represents "regal or senior authority" or "heavenly reward."

Keegan's Pub was designed and built by O'Sullivan Interiors in Waterford, Ireland. The design was completed in late 2001 and the first interior elements were transported via container on the IND Trader. It left the port of Dublin on January 3, 2002, and arrived in Chester, Pennsylvania, on January 15. The container arrived at 16 University Avenue on January 28. Included were the bar, back bar, lighting, bric-a-brac, flooring and much of the wall coverings. A second container with exterior elements, a fireplace surround and furniture arrived February 11.

The design is Edwardian, a style that came at the end of the Victorian era in the 1890s. It is authentic to Ireland and fits with the historic preservation district in which we are located. Keegan's is the first and only Irish Pub Concept (IPC) pub in Minnesota. IPC was developed by Guinness Brewing Company as a format for authentic Irish pubs. Although no two Irish pubs are alike, the IPC format calls for four elements to be present: Irish design and build, Irish food, Irish music and Irish staff.
